Over the years, society has started to get a better understanding of chiropractic therapy as a treatment method. For example, according to the American Chiropractor Association, 77% of people who got chiropractic care believed it was “very effective.” Getting the most out of chiropractic adjustments starts even before the appointment itself occurs. Patients need to consider how to ready their bodies to best respond to adjustment. For this concept to take root, there are a few ways for patients to prepare for their chiropractic therapy.
The day before your appointment, gather the necessary items so you won’t have to stress or rush the day of. Items could include medical records, a written or mental list of your medical history, your insurance and identification cards, and a form of payment. Most insurance companies cover chiropractic care, but you may also want to consult with yours beforehand just to be safe.
When you get chiropractic care, you should dress comfortably in loose-fitting shirts, pants, and leggings. Avoid anything constrictive, tight, or that lacks stretch. Your chiropractor may need to move you around a bit and even do X-rays, and tight clothes might get in the way.
Chiropractors do well at identifying problem areas, making a diagnosis, and prescribing treatment. However, it’s important to communicate clearly all of your symptoms, problem areas, and concerns. Avoid withholding any information that could be beneficial for the chiropractor to know.
Once the chiropractor understands what is wrong, they’ll provide various care methods. For example, they may place you on a chiropractic table and adjust your body using their hands or various tools. If you hear any popping or cracking noises, don’t be concerned. Nothing is breaking or actually cracking into pieces. This is simply trapped air being released from between the joints or discs, similar to the noises you hear when opening a soda bottle.
In addition to a chiropractic adjustment, your chiropractor may likely perform a massage before or afterward or suggest other treatments for relaxation, mobility, or pain management. You may be pleasantly surprised to find what a soothing experience a visit to the chiropractor can be. Your chiropractor should lay out a clear, specific treatment plan for you before the end of your visit. Be sure to ask questions if you have any and set your next appointment before you leave.
The ultimate goal is for patients to be in a state of being that’s “accepting” of the adjustments a chiropractor will make. For example, proper hydration will allow for muscle support after adjustments are made.
